Eastern Subterranean Termites...

Termites vs. Ants Appearance
Termites look very similar to flying ants while swarming. Both have 2 sets of wings. Termites wings are all the same size, while ants have a set of large wings and a set of smaller wings.
Subterranean Termites
Subterranean termites are the kind of termite encountered throughout New England. Although they nest in soil, subterranean termites can attack structures by building tubes that connect their nest to wood in structures.
- Termites eat the wood for cellulous content of the wood for food.
- Termites swarm in spring and occasionally in the fall.
- Termites work in tens of thousands, therefore, if not treated can eat their way through a whole house in less than 3 months – given the opportunity.
Biology
- Subterranean termites are social insects that live in colonies consisting of many individuals. The colonies are composed of workers, soldiers and reproductives.

Detection of Termites
- Termites remain hidden within wood and are often difficult to detect. However, subterranean termites may be detected by the presence of winged reproductive, mud tubes, and wood damage.
- Winged reproductive emerge from colonies in great numbers usually in the spring and during the daylight hours. Usually termites are first noticed by the presence of winged reproductive. Mating occurs during these flights, and males and females form new colonies.
